Stupidity in the Snow

Just a quick little blog today – and the first of 2009! A very belated happy new year to you all!

As you should be aware, in England this week we experienced the heaviest snowfall for 18 years, with many parts of the country experiencing upto a whole foot of snow – and I insist on using Imperial measurements. Yes, we all had a lot of fun in the snow, but my God, some kids were just dumb.

I say this in regards to the girl who died (alternate news link) when the car-roof she was tobogganing in crashed into a fence and the six-year old who fell through ice on a frozen lake. You also get this sort of moronic behaviour. My thought is this: why are children so stupid?

Surely it is common sense to not act dangerously in snow – the hill the girl died was closed to the public; take the hint? And why was a six year old and a nine year old let alone allowed outside without supervision, and that’s before we even get into why they wandered onto a frozen lake – surely the parents should have educated their children how dangerous this was?

Another grievance in regards to the girl – why should I be sympathetic? The family gave the usual diatribe to the media of how “smart, intelligent, how wonderful” she was. Yeah, she was so intelligent she caused her own death by her own stupidity: sliding in a makeshift sled down a dangerous, closed hill into a rather solid (Update: the fence was barbed wire – these people are mega dumb!) wooden fence. Really. I ain’t buying it.

Funny how it’s always the gifted, popular, sporty, intelligent, witty or amazing people then end up dead in these circumstances. What a world we live in.

Come to think of it, the same logic applies to silly teenagers who, despite being told time and again, and it being common sense (something my generation seems to lack, dangerously), decide to piss around on level crossings and end up being hit by the 14:07 from Victoria travelling at 80mph. Sorry, your dumb children get no sympathy.
